Lotte World Tower, Seoul, South Korea

Lotte Group is building new headquarters in Seoul, South Korea. One of the tallest Chinese skyscrapers, Lotte World Tower will reach 555m (1819ft) with 123 floors. Architecture firm behind the project is Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates. Project that will occupy 3.5 million ft2 / 325,000 m2 of space won MIPIM Future Awards Commendation in 2011.


"The winning selection in an international design competition, our design for the Lotte World Tower presents a sleek, modern image for the Lotte Moolsan Group in the 21st century. Taking inspiration from traditional Korean art forms in the design of the various interior program spaces, the sleek tapered form of the 555-meter (1,821-foot), 123-story tower will stand out from the city's rocky mountainous topography.

The tower is organized around a mixed-use program, comprising retail, office, officetel, and hotel, as well as an observation deck at the top. The building's first nine floors will contain retail; offices will occupy floors 11 to 47; 25 floors of officetel on floors 52 to 75; and a 7-star luxury hotel will comprise floors 80 to 109. The building's top 10 stories are earmarked for extensive public use and entertainment facilities including an observation deck and rooftop café. Upon completion in 2014, it will be one of the tallest buildings in Asia.

Our design melds a modern aesthetic with forms inspired by the historic Korean arts of ceramics, porcelain, and calligraphy. The tower's uninterrupted curvature and gentle tapered form is reflective of Korean artistry. The seam that runs from top to bottom of the structure gestures toward the old center of city. Elegance of form was one of the prime objectives, following Lotte's desire to bestow a beautiful monument to the capital city skyline.

Exterior materials will be light-toned silver glass accented by a filigree of white lacquered metal.
The building design will seek a LEED Gold accreditation, a measure of the owner's commitment to environmental responsibility. Sustainable design strategies incorporated into the design include photo-voltaic panels, wind turbines, external shading devices and water harvesting systems. This long anticipated project has now earned all major zoning approvals, and excavation is nearly complete."

South Korea has launched recently a few new skyscrapers which could easily go in the world's tallest buildings and that means only one: it's great time to pay attention on architecture in South Korea. Today read the story about Hydro Nuclear Power Headquarters by H Architecture proposed for Gyenju, amazing piece of modern architecture designed to blend with nature.



"Located in the mountainous landscape of Gyeongju, South Korea, the Korea Hydro Nuclear Power Headquarters avoids becoming an obtrusive landmark tower in order to respect the geographic and historic aspects of the site.

A simple, clean design that represents the rich culture of Gyeongju also becomes a symbol of KHNP as the creator of the world’s cleanest and safest means of energy production.  Wrapped in a shell of Corten Steel, the headquarter building is a subtle architecture that blends with and emerges from the adjacent mountainside.

Derived from the orbital lines of electrons, the design captures the nature of hydro nuclear power with elliptical and radiating forms and lines.  The primary building mass gradually slopes upward as if growing from the adjacent elevated landscape, creating a form large enough for the required program that does not disturb the nature or the rural context.

The façade takes on contrasting inner and outer designs.  On the inner façade which faces south, a modular system of prefabricated 3 dimensional fins allows for optimal sunlight within the office spaces while preventing excessive direct solar radiation and heat gain.  On the outer façade which primarily faces the north, a panelized elliptical surface of perforated oxidized steel articulates a continuous curvilinear wall.  The steel is articulated with a pattern created from the image on the Emille Bell, a national treasure and well-known local cultural icon.  The building creates a relationship between the history of Gyeonju and the advanced technologies of the hydro nuclear power."

Studio Daniel Libeskind designed three new skyscrapers for new Yongsan International Business District YIBD development in Seoul, South Korea. The skyscrapers called Dancing Towers, because of their dynamic design, will house residences, retail and commercial spaces.


"Dancing Towers, a project that is part of the new Yongsan International Business District YIBD development in Seoul, is a mixed used development that consists of three 41 story residential towers,( a total of 834 total residential units) with amenities, retail, parking and a connecting commercial podium base.

The design for the Dancing Towers is inspired by the traditional Korean Buddhist Dance known as Seung-Moo. The subtle rotation of the towers creates the illusion they are dancing, as inspired by the long sleeves of the Seung-Moo dancer’s traditional costumes, gracefully propelled by the dancer’s movements. The towers are engineered with a unique structure of a central concrete core and alternating cantilevered fin walls to support the floors that create column free buildings that allow the forms to ‘dance’ and twist while opening up panoramic views from the apartment interiors.

While creating an interrelated composition, the location of the three towers in the site and each tower’s rotations are oriented to create maximum light and views toward the water, the YIBD project, the city of Seoul and the mountains beyond for the residents."

Dancing Dragons by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture

We've been already posting about new Yongsan International Business District proposed for capital of South Korea, Seoul which is getting ready to get new impressive business district full of amazing towers designed by world's most famous architects and architecture firms. This time, you will read about Dancing Dragons Towers designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture.


The tallest skyscraper in new 3.4 million square m development will be Triple One Landmark Tower by Renzo Piano. AS+GG's Dancing Dragins will be one of the tallest towers in district. Tower 1 is set to grow to 450m (1,476ft) with 88 floors while tower 2 will be 390m (1,279ft) with 77 floors.

"Dancing Dragons is a pair of landmark supertall mixed-use towers for the new Yongsan International Business District in Seoul, Korea. The buildings, which include residential, “officetel” and retail elements, consist of slender, sharply angled mini-towers cantilevered around a central core.  The design aesthetic is highly contemporary yet informed by aspects of traditional Korean culture.


The mini-towers feature a dramatic series of diagonal massing cuts that create living spaces that float beyond the structure. This recalls the eaves of traditional Korean pagodas—a design theme echoed both in the geometry of the building skin and the jutting canopies at the towers’ base. The theme is extended in the building skin, which suggests the scales of fish and Korean mythical creatures such as dragons, which seem to dance around the core—hence the project’s name. (Yongsan, the name of the overall development, means “Dragon Hill” in Korean.)

Dancing Dragons’ scale-like skin is also a performative element. Gaps between its overlapping panels feature operable 600-mm vents through which air can circulate, making the skin “breathable” like that of certain animals.

Towers 1 and 2—about 450 meters and 390 meters tall, respectively—share an architectural language and, therefore, a close family resemblance, but are not identical. In the taller structure, the 88-level Tower 1, the massing cuts at the top and bottom of the mini-towers are V-shaped. In the 77-level Tower 2, the cuts move diagonally in a single unbroken line; they are also arranged in a radial pattern around the core that is perceptible as viewers move around the tower.

In both buildings, the mini-tower cuts are clad in glass at the top and bottom, making for dramatic skylights above the units at the highest levels and a transparent floor beneath the units at the lowest levels. This offers the opportunity for special high-value penthouse duplex units with spectacular 360-degree views of downtown Seoul and the adjacent Han River, along with an abundance of natural light.

The design of the 23,000-square-meter site—part of the larger Yongsan master plan —reinforces the angular geometry of the building massing and skin.  Landscape features include sloped berms that echo that geometry. The site also includes a retail podium with a crystalline sculptural form and sunken garden that provide access to a large below-grade retail complex."
